2. What we collect

When you create an account

We collect:

• your email address;
• your pseudonym;
• your password, which is stored securely in hashed form — we do not see your password in readable form;
• information you choose to add to your profile, such as your bio; and
• information necessary to protect signup, login and password-reset processes from automated abuse.

EchoedLives is for adults aged 18 or older. If we ask you to confirm your age during account creation, we record that confirmation.

When you use EchoedLives

Depending on the features you use, we may collect:

• the Echoes and chapters you write;
• unpublished drafts you save;
• comments and replies you post;
• reactions you give;
• Echoes you save;
• accounts you follow;
• reports you submit;
• Echoes you read; and
• other information necessary to operate features you choose to use.

Some Echoes and comments may contain very personal information because EchoedLives is designed for people to share experiences from their lives.

Information collected automatically

We may collect limited technical information necessary to operate, secure and understand the service, such as:

• browser and device information;
• IP address;
• technical logs;
• timestamps; and
• identifiers used to distinguish visits or count reads.

Analytics

We use Vercel Web Analytics to measure how EchoedLives is used. It does not use cookies. Visitors are identified by a value derived from the incoming request, which is discarded after 24 hours, and it is not used to recognize you across other websites.

The information recorded with a page view may include the page address, the referring page, filtered query parameters, an approximate location such as country, region and city, device type, operating system and browser.

Read-count identifier

We may store a random identifier in your browser to help us count a read once rather than repeatedly.

This identifier is not used to follow you across unrelated websites or for advertising.

Where applicable law requires consent before storing or accessing this identifier on your device, we will request that consent or use another legally permitted mechanism.

If you join the waiting list

We collect your email address and may record the language of the page from which you joined.

If you buy an Echo Book

When Echo Book purchasing becomes available, we will collect the information necessary to process and fulfill your order, which may include:

• your name;
• delivery address;
• the Echoes you select for the book;
• your book configuration and personalization choices; and
• information about your order.

Payments will be handled by a payment provider. EchoedLives will not receive or store your full payment card number.

3. What we do not do

We do not sell or license the text of your Echoes, chapters or comments to third parties for their own commercial use or for training generative AI models.

Your content remains subject to the limited rights described in our Terms of Use that are necessary for us to host, display, reproduce, moderate and operate EchoedLives and the features you request.

Your drafts

Unpublished drafts are private and are not visible to other users.

We access or process unpublished content only as reasonably necessary to operate, maintain, secure and support the service, comply with law, investigate reports or abuse, or when you ask us to help with an issue.

Your identity

We do not require your real name to create an EchoedLives account.

We do not publish your email address.

Your story and advertising

One principle will remain central to how we approach advertising:

Your story is not an advertising signal.

We will not use the text of your Echoes, chapters or comments, or sensitive information inferred from the stories you read or react to, to create advertising audiences or target advertising.

4. Advertising and audience data

Today

EchoedLives currently carries no advertising, and we do not currently use advertising trackers to follow you across unrelated websites or apps.

In the future

We intend to introduce advertising as EchoedLives grows.

Before advertising trackers or advertising data-sharing practices are introduced, we will update this Privacy Policy and provide any notices, consent mechanisms or opt-out controls required by applicable law.

Advertising technologies may involve information such as:

• browser or device identifiers;
• technical information about your device;
• general interaction with EchoedLives;
• advertising measurement information; and
• where legally permitted and appropriately disclosed, identifiers used to recognize an audience across services.

Depending on how an advertising program is implemented, disclosures of personal information to advertising partners may constitute “selling” or “sharing” personal information under applicable privacy laws.

Where required, you will be able to opt out.

What we will not use for advertising audiences

We will not create advertising audiences based on:

• the text of your Echoes;
• the text of your chapters;
• the text of your comments;
• unpublished drafts; or
• sensitive information inferred from the stories you read, save, comment on or react to.

For example, we will not infer that you have a particular health condition, religion, sexual orientation or other sensitive characteristic because you read or reacted to a story concerning that subject and then use that inference to target advertising.

If our advertising practices change materially, we will explain the change before it takes effect.

Where required by applicable law, we will provide appropriate privacy controls, honor recognized opt-out preference signals such as Global Privacy Control, and allow you to exercise applicable rights without being charged or denied ordinary access to EchoedLives.

5. Why we collect information

We use personal information as reasonably necessary to:

• create and manage your account;
• authenticate you;
• save your drafts;
• publish content you choose to publish;
• operate comments, reactions, Saved, following and other community features;
• count and measure reads and engagement;
• operate features you choose to use;
• process and fulfill Echo Book orders when that feature becomes available;
• process reports and moderate abuse;
• prevent fraud and protect the security of EchoedLives;
• provide customer support;
• comply with legal obligations;
• maintain and improve the operation of the service;
• send service-related communications, such as email confirmation, password resets, security notices and important changes to our terms or policies; and
• operate and measure advertising if and when advertising is introduced as described in Section 4.

We do not use your personal information for materially different purposes without providing appropriate notice and, where required, obtaining consent.

6. Who else receives information

We use a limited number of service providers to operate EchoedLives.

When Echo Book purchasing becomes available, we will also use:

Service providers receive information only as necessary for the services they provide to us and subject to the applicable agreements with them.

We may also disclose information where reasonably necessary to:

• comply with law, regulation, legal process or a valid governmental request;
• investigate fraud, abuse or security incidents;
• enforce our Terms of Use;
• protect the rights and safety of users, EchoedLives, Caraidiz Inc. or others; or
• respond to an emergency involving a risk of serious harm.

If Caraidiz Inc. is involved in a merger, acquisition, financing, reorganization or sale of all or part of its business, information may be transferred as part of that transaction, subject to applicable law.

7. What other people see

EchoedLives is built around pseudonymous public storytelling.

When you publish an Echo, other people may see information including:

• your pseudonym;
• your public bio and profile;
• the Echoes you publish;
• comments and replies you publish;
• public engagement information associated with your content; and
• other information you deliberately make public.

Published content should be treated as public.

It may be read, copied, shared or linked to by other people and may be indexed by search engines.

Your email address is not displayed publicly.

Reads and engagement

Other users do not receive a public list identifying everyone who has read an Echo.

Where EchoedLives displays engagement information, we may display aggregate counts such as reads, comments, reactions or other engagement.

Information necessary to calculate these features may still be processed internally by EchoedLives and its service providers.

Saved Echoes

The Echoes you save are private to your account.

Other users cannot see your Saved collection unless we introduce a feature that explicitly allows you to make something public and you choose to use it.

8. Echo Books

EchoedLives may allow an author to turn one or more of their Echoes into a physical book.

If you create an Echo Book, information necessary to produce and deliver the book will be sent to the print and fulfillment provider and payment provider selected by EchoedLives.

This may include:

• the selected Echoes and chapters;
• your pseudonym;
• book design and personalization information;
• selected reactions or engagement information;
• eligible selected reader responses; and
• information necessary to fulfill and deliver your order.

Reader comments in Echo Books

EchoedLives may allow an author to select published reader comments or responses for inclusion in an Echo Book.

Before this feature is made available to users, people posting eligible comments will be told that their response may be selected for inclusion in a printed Echo Book.

Comments posted before this notice and consent mechanism is introduced are not eligible for inclusion in an Echo Book offered through the customer Echo Book feature.

Existing comments may be used in private internal or founder test copies where appropriate, but they will not become eligible for inclusion in customer Echo Books retroactively.

Once a book has been physically produced, deleting a comment, Echo or account cannot recall or erase copies that have already been printed or delivered.

9. How long we keep information

We keep account information and user content for as long as reasonably necessary to operate your account and provide EchoedLives.

You may delete individual Echoes or your account using the controls provided by the service.

When you delete your account, we delete or de-identify associated personal information as appropriate, except where certain information needs to be retained for purposes such as:

• complying with legal obligations;
• maintaining financial, tax or transaction records;
• detecting or investigating fraud or security incidents;
• resolving disputes;
• enforcing our agreements;
• protecting the safety of users or others;
• maintaining child-safety reports where required or permitted by law; or
• maintaining temporary backups that are deleted or overwritten through our ordinary backup cycle.

Pseudonyms after account deletion

When you delete your account, your previous pseudonym may remain in our pseudonym history for up to 30 days so that it cannot immediately be claimed by another account.

After that period, it is released in accordance with our pseudonym rules.

Echo Book records

When Echo Book purchasing becomes available, information relating to purchases may need to be retained for accounting, tax, fraud prevention, fulfillment and customer-service purposes.

Physical books already produced or delivered cannot be deleted remotely or recalled when an account, Echo or comment is deleted.

Aggregated or de-identified statistics that no longer identify you may be retained.

10. Your choices and privacy rights

EchoedLives gives you controls over your information.

Depending on the feature, you may be able to:

• change your pseudonym or bio;
• publish or unpublish an Echo;
• delete an Echo;
• manage your Saved Echoes;
• manage accounts you follow;
• delete comments or other content where the product allows it; and
• delete your account.

You may also contact hello@echoedlives.com to request access to or correction of personal information we hold about you.

We will respond within the time required by applicable law and aim to respond sooner whenever reasonably possible.

Privacy rights under applicable law

Depending on where you live and which privacy laws apply to Caraidiz Inc., you may have rights relating to your personal information, including rights to:

• know or access certain information;
• obtain a copy of certain information;
• correct inaccurate information;
• request deletion;
• opt out of certain sales or sharing of personal information;
• limit certain uses of sensitive personal information; or
• exercise your rights without discriminatory treatment.

Not every right applies in every jurisdiction or circumstance.

For California residents, rights may be available under the California Consumer Privacy Act (CCPA), as amended by the CPRA, where the law applies.

If advertising practices that constitute selling or sharing under applicable law are introduced, EchoedLives will provide the opt-out mechanisms required by that law.

Where required, we will also honor recognized opt-out preference signals such as Global Privacy Control.

11. Children

EchoedLives is intended only for people 18 years of age or older.

We do not knowingly provide accounts to children.

We will review the report and take appropriate action where required.

Nothing in this section prevents us from retaining information where necessary or required for child-safety reporting, investigation or legal compliance.

12. Security

We use reasonable administrative, technical and organizational safeguards designed to protect personal information against unauthorized access, loss, misuse, alteration or disclosure.

These measures include protections appropriate to the nature of the information we process and the systems used to operate EchoedLives.

However, no website, application, database or method of transmitting information over the internet can guarantee absolute security.

You are responsible for keeping your account credentials confidential and should contact us if you believe your account has been compromised.

13. Where your information is held

EchoedLives is operated by a United States company, and our primary database is hosted in the United States.

If you access EchoedLives from outside the United States, your information may be transferred to and processed in the United States and other countries where our service providers operate.

Those countries may have privacy laws different from those where you live.

Where applicable law requires particular safeguards for international transfers, we will use appropriate mechanisms.

14. Changes to this policy

EchoedLives will change over time, and this Privacy Policy may change with it.

If we make a material change to how we collect, use or disclose personal information, we will provide appropriate notice before the change takes effect where required by law.

Depending on the change, notice may be provided on EchoedLives, by email, or both.

Where reasonably possible, we aim to give at least 14 days’ notice before a material change takes effect.

If applicable law requires consent rather than notice for a new use of personal information, we will request that consent.
