He Has Never Changed the Toilet Paper. Not Once.

4 / 5

How it ended

What happened next? What did you do, what changed, and where did it leave you?

After screaming and crying in front of him, and when I was by myself, I decided to play a different card. I decided to make his life a real nightmare—but in a subtle way. He didn't put his clothes in the hamper? I stopped putting them in the washing machine. He didn't come with me to the grocery store? Fine, I'd buy only what I liked. And like him, I'd forget every single thing he asked me to do. I decided to stop building my calendar around the chores. I went to the gym, to the movies, to visit my friends. When I was home, I did the bare minimum. You don't want to run the dishwasher before bed? I'm fine. I'll have my coffee on my way to work. He started to make comments. Politely, I answered that I was exhausted, that I had a ton of work, and that it was okay to live like this. I explained my plan to my close friends and asked them to stop coming over, because that would have meant cleaning for them. Then he tested me twice. The second time was the last. The first time, he invited his friends over, thinking that, as usual, I would clean and cook for them, and clean up after they left. Two days before, he randomly asked what my plans were for the visit. I said, "Nothing special." I think he thought I meant nothing special in terms of recipes. I meant nothing special in terms of preparation, or cleaning, either. The next day, twenty-four hours before they came, he asked, "But you didn't do any groceries? Or cleaning?" I replied, "I did my groceries and my cleaning. Not yours. Those are your friends, and it's your chore week. So clean up, go buy some food, and maybe it will convince me to do something." He was like, "Please, darling, next time, for sure," and stopped the conversation. No time for an argument. Time to be patient and calm. The next morning, he came to wake me up at 10 a.m., asking why I was still sleeping when his friends would be there in less than six hours and nothing was done, no cleaning, no cooking. Calmly, I replied that I had asked him yesterday to clean and go to the grocery store, and that tonight I had my yoga session—the only activity keeping me sane. He was so pissed. He almost punched the wall. "How can you do that to me?" he said. I replied, "How can you do that to me, over and over, year after year? I still have to cook and clean for you. So this time is the last time: I'll help you clean while you go to the grocery store."
